HOW TO | use a Sewing Pattern Block without manipulation

How many times have you seen a Pattern Block and want to sew it but you hesitate because you are not an experienced pattern maker or sewer?

Basic Pattern Blocks are easy to use even if you have just started sewing. Let's do the procedure together.

1. Choose your Basic Pattern Block.

For this example, we have chosen the Kid's Hoodie.

2. Checking if you need to create new pattern pieces.

Sewing pattern blocks usually include only the basic pieces which you use in order to manipulate them into new designs or in order to create the complimentary pattern pieces. Basic Pattern Blocks include a variety of pieces in order to make it easier for you to reach your final design quickly.
For example, in the Kid's Hoodie Pattern Block, besides the Front, Back and Sleeve patterns, you will find patterns for: the pocket, sleeve and hem finishings and hood. If you don't want to manipulate any of them you can proceed to the next step.

3. Adding seam allowance.

Included in the files you receive is a guide for adding seam allowance.  However, each sewer may use their own desired seam allowance. Seam allowance and cutting are connected. Following our example, for the Kid's Hoodie we would add:

  • 0 cm to center front & center back. Cut them on fold instead. That
  • 1 cm to all seams except for the hood, where we propose 2 options:
    a. 1 cm seam allowance allover. Cut 4 pieces, mirrored in pairs of 2. That will create 2 hoods, inside and outside which you can sew together, turn on the right sides and attach to the hoodie or
b.3 cm seam allowance at the face opening so that you can fold and topstitch the fabric. 1 cm on the center back and on the seam with the body. For this, cut 2 pieces mirrored.
  • 1 cm to the sleeve finishing. Cut 2 on fold.
  • 1 cm to the hem finishing. Cut 1 on fold.

4. Proceed with the cutting.

And that's it.
