Understanding Seam Allowances in Sewing
When creating a sewing pattern, blocks are made without seam allowances. Once all the pieces of the pattern are complete, you’ll need to add seam allowances based on the fabric, stitch type, and sewing machine you're using. Here’s a quick guide on common seam allowances:
- Basic seams: 1 cm (0.39 inch)
- French seams: 1.5 cm (0.59 inch)
- Hems on body or sleeves: 1-5 cm (0.39 - 1.97 inches)
- Zippers: 1-2 cm (0.39 - 0.79 inches), depending on the zipper
- Pockets or decorative stitches: Varies based on garment style
For made-to-order garments, it’s often best to use a wider seam allowance. This gives you the flexibility to adjust the fit if needed later on. By considering these factors, you can ensure your garment has the perfect fit and finish.
